~About the Book~

Seventeen-year-old Jamil Ramos grew up on Alabama’s Gulf Coast believing his mom, Loretta, was his only living relative. She put a trumpet in his hands as a toddler and sparked his love of jazz. But when Loretta drops a bomb on Jamil from her deathbed- she’s not his mama and his daddy is still alive, living in Charleston, S.C. – his world is turned upside down.

Now, with the only mama he’s ever known gone and the Loyola University trumpet audition less than a week away, Jamil has trouble feeling his music. When his band teacher tells him to get it together, Jamil decides to hitchhike to South Carolina over to find his father and get his questions answered. All he has is a name –Leon Ramos.

Jamil relies on the kindness of the strangers he meets-a gay teen kicked out of his home, a runaway prostitute, and a street musician-as he makes his way across Florida and Georgia trying to avoid the cops along the way. But when Jamil is robbed of his most prized possession, his trumpet, his plans go anywhere but where he’d hoped. That trumpet was supposed to be his ticket for a scholarship, the only way to college his mama could give him. Lost and alone without it, Jamil wonders if finding his father is worth risking his future.

High Maga Audio Book Tour: Karin Rita Gastreich @eolynchronicles

I'm so excited today to be hosting Karin  Rita Gastreich on the blog tour for the release of the audio book of HIGH MAGA!!

First a little about the book...

HIGH MAGA [audio edition]
Karin Rita Gastreich (author)
Darla Middlebrook (narrator)

Sisters in magic, Eolyn and Adiana seek to revive a craft once forbidden to women. When war strikes at the heart of the kingdom, their fledgling community of magas is destroyed; its members killed, captured or scattered.

In hopes of defending her people, Eolyn tries to escape the occupied province and deliver to King Akmael a weapon that might secure their victory. Trapped by the invading army, Adiana is taken prisoner and placed at the mercy of the ruthless Prince Mechnes.

Even as their world is torn asunder, Eolyn and Adiana cling to a common dream. Courage and perseverance guide them toward a future where the Daughters of Aithne will flourish in a world set free from the violence of men.

“War propels the book forward, and the characters are at their best when the events engulfing them are at their worst.” –Publishers Weekly

And now, the interview!

1. How did you decide which route to take when approaching audiobook production? Working through your publisher, was the production hired out externally or handled internally?

My publisher, Hadley Rille Books, made the decision to release an audio edition of High Maga. The production was coordinated through the Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX). Hadley Rille had already produced several audiobooks with ACX, including the audio edition of my first novel, Eolyn.

2. What all is in involved in finding a narrator, and how did you decide on the right voice?

ACX is designed as a platform in which publishers, authors, and narrators can find each other and then coordinate the production of an audio book. When a publisher or author is ready to contact a narrator, they post an announcement on the exchange. Interested narrators submit auditions by reading an excerpt from the novel.

In the case of High Maga, deciding on the right voice was relatively easy. We listened to a few auditions, but I was very interested in working again with Darla Middlebrook, who had already narrated Eolyn.  Darla is a very talented narrator, and she is reliable when it comes to meeting deadlines and so forth. When Darla expressed interest in narrating my second novel, it was pretty much a done deal.  I loved the way she handled the different voices in Eolyn, and given that foundation I knew she would do a great job with High Maga.

3. Was there a lot of editing and revising to make sure the narrator was reading certain sections the way you wanted them read?

In the case of Darla, not so much. Before recording, there was a fairly involved process of going through all the names of characters and places, to make sure pronunciations were correct. After Darla finished the first recording, I identified a few sections that needed to be reworked, mostly some dialogues where the voices were a little too similar. But in general, Darla really connected with the story and I was very pleased with her narration. Just thinking about it makes me want to listen all over again!

4. From start to finish, about how long did the audiobook process take?

About 8-9 months. That includes the audition process, plus edits and final preparation for release at the end. High Maga is a full-length 120,000 word novel; shorter works might not take as long. Even when the author and narrator are done, there’s no guarantee as to exactly when the book will come out, as ACX has its own quality control process and may not release the audiobook for another month or so.

I guess I should point out that I had a relatively smooth and trouble-free experience, but I know from other authors that it doesn’t always work that way. For a variety of reasons, your first choice in narrator might not be able to finish the work. Or, they might produce a narration with which you, the author, are wholly unsatisfied. Making an audio book is a significant commitment of time and effort, if you want to see it through to the end and ensure a quality product. Be prepared for everything to take up to a year or more in order to get the book done right.

5. What tips do you have for authors interested in producing an audiobook?
When soliciting auditions, choose an excerpt that features a variety of voices young and old, male and female. You want to get a good feel for the flexibility of the narrator when it comes to interpreting different characters.

Do not expect the narrator to read the book just like you would. Narrators are artists in their own right, and they are entitled to their own interpretation of scenes and characters. If you really, truly feel a particular voice is way off (too whiny, too bold, too grumpy, or whatever), then say so. But allow the benefit of the doubt when listening to your narrator’s final product. You just might discover some amazing aspects of your work that you never recognized before.

On the business end of things, independent authors may be put off by the fact that ACX assumes complete control over pricing. Unlike KDP, you cannot go in and change the price at will. ACX does provide free download codes when a book is released for the author to use however he or she pleases. Royalties are also less generous than with KDP. In addition, depending on the type of contract you choose, you may need to split royalties with the narrator. So make sure to consider all this carefully and decide whether the payoff will be enough before you commit.

6. For readers who don't currently listen to audiobooks, what benefits do you find in audiobooks that ebook/paperbacks don't have?

Ironically, I don’t listen to audiobooks that much myself. Most of my reading is in paperback or to a lesser extent, ebooks. I do think audio books are great for anyone who loves stories and has to endure long commutes. In my experience, a lot of audiobook fans fall into this category. Avid readers dealing with significant time constraints like get their stories in by listening on the way to work. Audiobooks also help the hours pass during long road trips.

At home, I enjoy listening to audiobooks in the evening before I go to sleep. It’s like going back in time and having Mom or Dad read you a bedtime story.

7. What was your favorite part of having your books turned into audiobooks?

Something I kind of hinted at earlier: Darla helped me understand my work in a whole new way. In listening to her interpretation, I felt like I was discovering the story all over again. The drama of the characters, their struggles, triumphs, and heartbreak, became fresh and new.

It’s also just fun to know I have an audiobook (in fact, two audiobooks!) out there. Many people don’t have time to read and prefer to listen to books. So there is a large audience that didn’t have access to Eolyn’s world before and can now explore it fully. To all of them I say, “Welcome!”  Enjoy the magic.

Where can you get a copy?

Guest Post from Author Brooke Williams

Guest Post Topic:

Your novel involves the concept of putting money above other aspects of life. Talk us through this concept and how its involved in your novel.

Money is a huge deal in this world, is it not? Sadly, it seems as if people are driven by money on a daily basis. They have it…they want to spend it…they hoard it…they don’t have it…they need it. It causes constant problems! In “Wrong Place, Right Time,” the main character, Kate Covington is in a huge amount of debt. She’s living paycheck to paycheck. And not because she went crazy shopping with her credit card either. Her debt is noble and justified. But it’s still debt and she desperately needs to clear her name. On the other end, we have Chad Leida who appears to be practically rolling in money, though he hasn’t done much to earn it himself. He wants to do what he wants to do and that’s that.

So though money is brought up and a very important aspect of this novella, it is also not at the highest level of importance. The characters realize their focus is off at times and make adjustments accordingly. In the end, it’s more about emotions, companionship, love, ambition and maybe even a little attitude.

I hope you enjoy all of the elements of “Wrong Place, Right Time” and how they come together. When you set your e-reader down after finishing this book, I hope there’s a smile on your face and laughter in your heart.

Blog Tour: Apocalypta by Robin Matchett @RobMatchettAuth

Approach to Apocalypta by Rob Matchett

What people should know about the book…

Apocalypta is a novel about the future, perhaps even a novel from the future. I emphasize from because the setting of the novel is on the cusp of the 25th century and the story takes us back in time to our present 21st century. So it would seem in a sense that the story in the future is built on the past retrospective to our present time. I felt that it was important to capture to the best of my ability a realistic scenario of times to come.

Obviously, one can never know the future until it happens, but using a template of the past 400 years and its historical shocks and paradigm shifts, a fair guesstimate can be made. What is especially interesting is the sudden trajectory of technical progress within the last 30 years with the advent of global use of the internet through chip circuitry and fibre optics which apparently had their origin from alien technology according to highly placed sources that the author had researched.

A very credible source was Col. Philip Corso who was ordered to seed the reverse-engineered alien technology into the military-industrial complex 60 years ago. Corso sat on the National Security Council. Others have affirmed the veracity of his position and rank and revelations in his book The Day After Roswell. One might think this is ridiculous or delusional because there was not barely any notice taken of his story which came out in the 1990s. The media basically ignored it, because they couldn’t get any endorsement from any legitimate government agency.

Not surprising. Perhaps, the powers that be felt it couldn’t hurt the classified nature of deeply compartmentalized alien programs if a little information was released innocuously by a retired officer of the army. Or perhaps, little by little some plan had been enacted to slowly acclimatize the ignorant public about what is really going on. Anyone who knew the emphatic truth would naturally wonder why the media didn’t proclaim globally AMERICAN GOVERNMENT HAS MADE CONTACT WITH ALIENS! Well, that has yet to happen. Is there collusion in government to suppress that kind of mainstream exposure? Or is media frightened of the shocking nature of that kind of information – the most profound in the history of civilization.

My book isn’t so much about this; just that the premise of this great secret kept from the public has a karmic resolution down the ages to come. Just as we discover and unlock secrets of the past, and history is constantly being rewritten to reflect new understandings, and so in our story we unlock the secrets of our present from the future. Whistleblowers have given us a glimpse of the deep political nature of forbidden knowledge and its uses in the power structures of global supremacy and security. Moreover, the phenomenal implications of a universe replete with thousands upon thousands of ancient civilizations, some hundreds of millions of years beyond us, and others only fifty thousand or so years beyond us, at least must give us pause as to our precarious emergence as a technological upstart.

Apocalypta is really about humanity and how we must adapt eventually to the universal family. And yes, we are apparently in a relative way, seen as such for the most part in spite of various bad apples on both sides. It should be known we are feared as somewhat barbaric and do not want our participation in a larger sense until we have managed our global destructive ways into something harmonious politically, culturally and ecologically. Indeed we have a long way to go – thousands of years.

Apocalypta attempts to enlighten our darker fears and dystopian defaults. Certain characters such as Cephren, Flower Child, Jimmy Pidgeon and Heyoka are new prototypes that alight the path to harmony for the ages to come. These types exist in all times, as well as their darker opposites. This is my story for humanity’s leap into the future and integration into the galactic community, which has already begun.

Meet the Author

Rob (Robin) Matchett was born in Paris, France, in 1956 of Canadian parents, and moved to Canada at four years old. Apparently on the way, he spent hours in a porthole watching the sea, pondering existence. Now his life continues through a porthole – a regret being he didn’t remain in France a few more years.

Though, embracing Canada he went native, steeped in the elements from where land-locked on the crest of a giant windblown hill, he commands from the bridge of a ship, foundered on springs, fields and forests. Still unreleased from the yoke of his servitude, he dabbles in the stars, unlocking secrets from history and the future. Many transfigurations have occurred, of which he has faithfully transcribed into various literary forms, including novels, poems and film scripts, and continues to do so. Among other eclectic interests, he is known to be well-read; enjoy wholesome kitchen garden culinary pursuits; calvados; has musical inclinations, and often known to be wired into the Grateful Dead. He is of a retiring nature, addicted to movies and documentaries, considered a professional obligation rather than lesser appraisals.

More about Apocalypta

Apocalypta is a novel about a post-apocalyptic world at the cusp of the 25th century. With the discovery of a synaptic memory chip holding the memories of individuals in the past, there is an attempt to avert a return to the terrible conflagrations of the past. This chip - 'the eyes of god' - holds salvation through the truth. The main character, implanted with the chip, bids the reader to follow history back to our present time in order to understand the future. Moreover, humanity has a chance to become members of a galactic confederation, which through various species have been instrumental in our emergence from earliest times. Many unusual characters color this story, which is ultimately about the struggle for humanity to rise to a higher place in its long quest for survival.

Kissed Blog Tour: Guest Post by Kimberly Loth

Favorite YA Couples ~ A Guest Post by Kimberly Loth

Thanks for having me here today. I read almost exclusively YA novels, but I read a wide variety of genres within that. Today I’d like to share with you my favorite couples in YA lit.

Historical Fiction:

Jacky Faber and Jamie Fletcher From Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer. I could never write historical fiction and I’m not crazy about it as a genre but this is one of my all time favorite series. Currently there are nine or ten books in the series and I love every single one of them. Jacky is a feisty girl who pretends to be a boy so she can work as a ships boy in the early 19th century. She’s got serious spunk and attitude and poor Jamie can’t seem to hang on to her. In spite of the fact that they often end up on opposite sides of the globe, she still loves Jamie fiercely.

Contemporary:

Alex and Brittany from Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkes. Poor sexy boy and rich popular girl, they are doomed from the very beginning. Full of tension and angst, their relationship leaves me on the edge of the seat for the whole book. Simone has written other books in this series using Alex’s brothers and they were very good, but Perfect Chemistry is magical.

Sci-Fi:

Bree and Finn from Loop by Karen Akins. Technically this book isn’t released yet, but I managed to get my hands on an ARC. It comes out in October. I’m also not crazy about sci-fi, but this book is so fun to read. Bree is a time traveler from the 23rd century that meets Finn in a botched midterm to the 21st century. (Yep, she goes to time travel school, how cool is that?). Bree is fun snarky girl who has knack for getting herself into sticky situations and Finn just wants to keep her safe. He’s smokin’ hot and in spite of Bree’s reluctance he manages to win her over. Their first kiss is one of my all time favorites in YA lit.

Fantasy:

Harry and Ginny from Harry Potter By JK Rowling. I don’t think I need to explain that one. Paranormal YA: Naomi and Kai from Kissed by me (Yep, shameless plug for my own book.) Wait, I meant to say Naomi and Puck. I love myself a love triangle. Naomi finds herself in middle of doozy in Kissed. Both are good guys, both have reasons for her to love them. Kai is broody and romantic, Puck is fun and crazy. Both are fantastic kissers. How is a girl supposed to pick???? If you want to read more about Naomi, Kai, and Puck, you can find the book here: http://amzn.to/1oeQAPf. It is only 99 cents.

Kissed (The Thorn Chronicles)
by Kimberly Loth

Naomi is rescued from her impending nuptials by the mysterious Kai who sends her off to Vegas with a sweet kiss and a promise of only a short time apart. But there Naomi meets Puck, a boy with wine colored hair and kisses that rival Kai’s. Soon Naomi is swept into a glamorous world where kisses hold power and not is all is at it first appears. Soon she must choose, freedom but heartache or love and captivity.

Blog Tour: Incantation Paradox by Annamaria Bazzi (Guest Post and Review)

I'm excited to have Annamaria Bazzi on the blog today with a Guest Post for the Incantation Paradox Blog Tour!

First... a little about the book!

Magic is an illusion. It doesn’t really exist. Or does it?
A horrible car accident destroys Dolores Reynard’s life. But instead of waking up in a hospital bed, she awakens in a teenager’s body. Soon, she discovers she is at the heart of the murderous mystery surrounding the death of Mona, the young girl whose body she occupies. Caught between an evil greater than she ever imagined and a wizard who heals her tattered heart, she is forced to play a dangerous game of intrigue in the hopes of finding a way to return to her previous life.
Will magic be her ally, or will it lead to her demise once and for all.

Now... let's hear from Annamaria!

Balancing the emotions of a teen with the thoughts of an adult...

When I was a teen, I struggled with my mother whose ideas I believed to be antiquated, but as an adult, I struggle with my children because I now understand that although fashion and slang may change the struggles teens go through to find their identity don’t change so much.

It was these conflicts in my life that made me want to revisit the struggle with a twist—two essences in one body.

Watching my children go through puberty made me realize that the new hormones cursing through their bodies, at times, made them resemble irrational, hormonal pregnant women. I knew what that felt like after having had four children. This became one aspect I played upon to bring forth Dolores’ struggle with the teen hormones in Mona’s body. It didn’t take too much to get the protagonist to realize this fact.

Hormones are powerful and, many times, they engulfed Dolores, pushing her into irrational acts she had a hard time reconciling because they came from the teenager. In many ways they felt familiar—the mood swings of a hormonal pregnant woman.

Sometimes it became difficult to find her adult feelings and rational.

At times, I had to sit back, close my eyes and just try to feel my way through a situation, thinking about my girls and how they would react. Although I have to be honest, it was easier to describe the reactions of the teen then those of the woman. Somewhere along the way, I think I forgot to grow up.

To find a good balance between the two women proved to be a bigger challenged than I had original thought when embarking on this adventure. Many times, even Dolores’ reactions were too childish and those kind souls critiquing the first drafts would chastise, wondering where the woman had disappeared too.

Throughout this journey I’ve come to have a greater appreciation for character driven novel—the inner struggles people have in their lives.

~ABOUT THE AUTHOR~
Although born in the United States, Annamaria Bazzi spent a great deal of her childhood in Sicily, Italy, in a town called Sciacca. Italian was the language spoken at home. Therefore, she had no problems when she found herself growing up in a strange country. Upon returning to the states, she promised herself she would speak without an accent. She attended Wayne State University in Detroit Michigan, where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Computers with a minor in Spanish.

Annamaria spent twenty years programming systems for large corporations, creating innovative solution, and addressing customer problems. During those years, she raised four daughters and one husband. Annamaria lives in Richmond Virginia with her small family where she now dedicates a good part of her day writing.

And now for the review...

Waking up with the body of a teenager might be a pleasant surprise for a forty-something year old woman. Except, it's not her body. More than a little freaked out, Dolores is desperate  to find out why everyone is calling her Mona and acting like nothing is wrong.

Right from the beginning chapter, I loved the premise for this book! The concept of a woman's  spirit, or essence, being pulled from her dying body into that of a complete stranger is captivating. The repercussions  are endless! Not only is Dolores utterly confused and frightened, she also has to deal with the conflicting and often irrational hormones of a teenage girl. Keeping hold of her real identity becomes more and more difficult as the days pass. She doesn't understand, and has a hard time escaping, the teenage lust felt toward Eric, even when he scares her and gives off a serious  creeper vibe.v At the same time, grown-adult-Dolores is finding herself inexplicably attracted to Mona's "uncle" Jason. It's a mess. One Dolores has no clue how to fix.

On top of the emotional conflict and confusion, Dolores misses the two teenage daughters she was pulled away from. She's desperate to get back to her old life, but reluctant to leave Jason behind. No matter what, she needs help to figure out how to set things right. Eric doesn't seem to be an option, despite her poured-on charisma. She fears Jason is hiding things from her, though, and doesn't know if she can trust him completely. Watching her figure out who to trust was very intriguing. I was pulled into the story and was very eager to see how Dolores would escape the danger she finds herself in. I loved the romantic elements in the story. It was a tricky situation to navigate, but the author handled it beautifully. The last chapter was agonizing as I couldn't wait to see how everything would work out. This is a great read for teens (very clean story) and for adults who want a bit of  magic and mystery!

Excerpt

Chapter Three
Dolores snuggled deeper into the covers, the fresh lavender fragrance from the bedding filling her nostrils. How sweet! Grabbing a fistful of sheets, she inhaled. Wait...the sheets don’t feel right. With a jolt, she opened her eyes and stared at smooth ceiling plaster, the crack she’d nagged her ex-husband, Ethan, to fix before he’d walked out, gone. When she moved the covers farther down her body, silk ran through her fingers. What? With a gasp, she sat up, blood rushing from her head bringing momentary vertigo. Her gaze raced around the unfamiliar room. Her heartbeat inched into her throat.

Two French doors leading out to a wide balcony stood where a large picture window had once been. She rubbed her eyes, but nothing changed. Oh my God. What happened? She swallowed hard. The pictures of the girls were gone, replaced by a poster of Edward the vampire from Twilight. She shivered. Where am I? How the hell did I get here? Black geometric figures flashed in her vision. She rubbed a hand across her forehead, pressing clammy palms on her closed lids. Damn. Not another migraine. When she released the pressure and glanced around, the tranquil tea-rose wall color did nothing to calm her. The morning light filtered through the curtains, assaulting her eyes.

She squeezed them closed, gasping for air, lungs burning. Breathe deep. In, out, slow.... Throwing the covers aside, she let them fall to the floor. When she stood, her feet rested on a black-and-white sheep pelt. The warmth from the woolen carpet wrapped around her cold feet. Her heart continued to somersault, slamming against her ribcage. Shaking her head, she pressed her fingertips to her temples, hoping to wake up from whatever bizarre nightmare had trapped her. Knock, knock, knock. Dolores jumped, rounding toward the foreign-looking bedroom door. Was there an enemy on the other side, armed and dangerous?

“Mona, time to get up,” came an unfamiliar voice. “You don’t want to be late on your first day of school.”

Terrified, her mind focused only on the unfamiliar baritone voice. Oh, God. Oh, God. Help me. Frozen, unable to decide if she should run or hide, her mind sank into that dark place where thoughts became hard to sort.

“Mona! Hurry up.”

“Think.” Gritting her teeth, she managed small panting breaths. “Breathe and think.”

Heavy footsteps indicated the man’s departure. Who the hell was that? Did he call me Mona? She took a moment to compose herself, to get her bearings then inched through the room, making sure she was alone. Tiptoeing, she crept past a mirror, stopping to stare at the reflection. Her eyes grew wide, and she gasped. The reflection of her seventeen-year-old self mocked her. Leaning forward, she examined luminous, tight skin—the appearance of youth. How the hell did I get so young? But then, everything about her felt different—vibrant, energetic.

The throb at the back of her head came and went. Shocked, she pulled up the oversized sweatshirt she wore to discover tight abs. Impossible! Dolores pinched her stomach. What happened to the little pouch of fat from having children? Her lower lip quivered with a bit of excitement at the sight of toned legs. Holy crap! Wait...what is this? Thin elastic strips circling her hips held a tiny bit of fabric in place. Butt floss...I’m wearing a thong? Tanned skin covered tight muscles, giving her buttocks a sexy, jaw-dropping appeal. Facing the mirror straight on, she cupped her breasts. No longer saggy like plastic bags stuffed with silly putty, but firm and perky. She yanked the sweatshirt, stretching it as far down as it would go, grateful it fit more like a micro-dress.

The idea that what was happening might not be a dream lingered in a corner of her mind. But she couldn’t remember anything that would explain how she might have gotten here. The night before had turned into a whiteboard. It doesn’t make sense. She raised shaky hands to touch smooth cheeks. I must be going into shock. Leaning closer to the mirror, she observed normal pupils—no dilation, no shock. Reality? She shook her head. No. More like a nightmare beginning. Knock, knock, knock. She spun toward the door. Oh my God. He’s at the door again.

“Mona, are you getting up?” the same voice called out. A moment later, footsteps moved down the hall. Bile pushed up her throat. She cringed at the bad taste, breathing deep to settle her stomach. She glared at the door, unable to move. Who is Mona? The question echoed around her brain. Nothing made sense. A sparkle of crushed glass flashed through her mind. Tumbling. The images blackened, and a sharp pain stabbed her temple then ran down her spine. She winced, disoriented, puzzled. The door opened. Dolores held her breath.

A tall man stood in the doorway, his brows knitted, appraising her. “Is everything all right?”

Who is he? Exhaling, she edged toward the French doors in search of escape. Did he bring me here? Why is he staring at me like that? Is he going to kill me? A burst of light in her mind’s eye blinded her. Plummeting. Rolling. Glass grinding. Agony. And then...nothing. She flinched, the room seeming to spin.

“Mona?” Sweat rolled down the sides of her face, along her neck. She wiped her cheek. The more she studied him, the more she relaxed in his presence, realizing his expression held a great deal of compassion, of worry—not threat or malice.

“Who are you?” The concern in his chocolate-colored eyes deepened.

“How’s your head, kiddo?”

She reached toward the relentless throb at the base of her skull. Why is he calling me kiddo? “Ouch!” She fingered a lump. “What happened?”

“Don’t you remember?” He stepped toward her. Gasping, she moved closer to the balcony door. She reached for the knob. Locked. Her mind raced through all the self-defense moves she knew. He stopped mid-stride, his brow furrowing.

“Mona?” His soft inflection sounded strange to her ear. With feet spread shoulder width apart, she stood ready to strike. He moved to sit at the foot of the bed.

In a low voice, she repeated, “Who are you?” Then added, “Where am I?” Even while she spoke, she measured the distance to the open bedroom door.

“Mona, you hit your head pretty hard last night after you tumbled down the stairs.” He tapped his skull with one finger.

“But I’m not Mona. My name is Dolores,” she protested with an energy she didn’t think she could muster. She forced her fists to her hips.

“Kiddo, it seems you’re suffering from amnesia after all.” He hit his temple. “It doesn’t make sense. You didn’t even have a concussion. Do you remember the MRI?” She shook her head. “Do you have a headache?” She nodded. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I always have them.” Migraines had been constant companions like little lap dogs that never left her side. The current pain didn’t seem quite as bad as most, but the lump on the back of the head sent shockwaves of doubt through her brain. He patted the space next to him.

“Come sit by me.” She stared at his kind yet unfamiliar face, making no move to do as he suggested, but did let her arms drop to her sides. Her heart did another flip before slowing. Realizing the man’s gaze never roamed over her half-naked body, she took a calming breath. A smile brushed his lips. “Don’t be so afraid. I’m your father.”

“You’re not my father. I don’t know who you are.” She shut her jaw so tight it began to ache, but no matter how hard she dug into her memories, nothing surfaced that made any sense. She closed her eyes, willing the nightmare to go away. Not a chance. Peeking through her eyelashes, she observed the stranger. With a deep sigh, he lowered his chin to his chest.

“Then can you tell me who you are?”

“My name is Dolores....” The man sighed again. How can this be? In the mirror, she saw herself—a self from almost thirty years ago, but nonetheless herself.

“What do you see?” He opened his hands, showing his palms.

“I see my daughter, suffering.”

“What does she look like?”

“Like a wild cat, cowering in a corner.”

She inhaled. “Do I look like your daughter?”

He wiped his face with his hand. “You are my daughter.”

The world had gone crazy. I’m a teen? No, I’m a mom with teenage daughters. Even though she struggled to draw enough air into her lungs, her head spun, making her stomach queasy again. She reached for the dresser to catch her balance. Two strong arms scooped her off her feet.

“Whoa. I got you.” He carried her to the bed. “Baby girl, how are you feeling?” Dolores’s mind churned, pondering the puzzle pieces that did not fit. When the room stopped spinning, he came into focus, sitting on a dainty upholstered chair. He had a kind face with a strong, square jaw, his full lips forming a fine line. His gaze was locked on her.

Chilled, she shuddered. “I don’t remember you.” She continued to stare—no recollection whatsoever. Rising onto her elbows, she blinked several times. A flash.

The same man saunters into the backyard. Mona jumps off the swing, screaming, “Daddy, Daddy.” She runs. He bends with open arms to catch her, lifting her into the air. She laughs when he twirls her around. “How’s my little girl today?” Her small hands wrap around his neck. “I love you, Daddy.”

She squeezed her eyes shut tight to chase away the memory that wasn’t hers. Instead, she allowed images of her daughters playing with their father to come into focus. A tear snaked down her cheek. She swiped it away.

“Are you still feeling dizzy?” he asked.

 “No.”

“You don’t remember me?” She shook her head, but stopped because she did have recollections of the man. Fog crept into her mental peripheral, growing, wrapping around her brain, rendering her incapable of coherent thought. The doorbell rang.

“That must be Eric.” He looked to the bedroom door and waited.

A few seconds later, the front door slammed. Footsteps thumped up the stairs. The man got up, leaving to meet the person in the hallway. Their muffled conversation reached her ears, but she couldn’t understand the words. Jumping off the bed, she searched for any clues to figure out why the world had turned upside down. On the elegant white desk sat a laptop. Propelled by desperation, she opened it and hit the On button. The screen flickered to life from sleep mode. Thank God it’s not password protected. Perched on the edge of the chair, she clicked the icon to start a browser—adrenalin pulsed through her body. Surely, her email account would hold some answers. She tried to log on.

The words “The email you entered does not belong to any account” flashed onto the screen. What? Thinking she’d made a typo, she tried again. The message flashed on the screen again. Her email didn’t exist. Maybe I no longer exist. She hesitated, pondering her entire life. Dolores Reynard’s life. It was too vivid, too real to ignore. She recreated her email account and wrote a message to Ethan. Thank God that went through.

On second thought, she decided to send a message to her daughters also. Relief filled her heart. How long would it take them to see her message and reply? She closed the laptop. She looked around the unfamiliar room, and her breathing sped up, coming in short, uneven sputters. I can’t hyperventilate, or I’ll faint. She panted into her hands forcefully, slowly, unable to clear her mind and understand what in heavens could have brought her here. She really needed to talk to someone, anyone from the life she knew she belonged to.

From the corner of her eye, she noticed a cell phone lying on a pile of discarded clothes. She rushed over and dialed Ethan’s number. Ringing. More ringing. Seriously? Come on, I don’t have much time. Ethan, where are you? He always answered right away. Maybe he didn’t recognize the number on caller ID. Voice mail came on, but then the line just cut off before she could hear the greeting. Damn it. With a groan she tossed the phone aside. The Richmond Times Dispatch. She typed her name in the paper’s search box. Bingo. The morning headlines were unmistakable.

POLICE CHASE ENDS IN DEATH. Dolores Rima Reynard was pronounced dead at the Medical College of Virginia several hours after arrival.

The Key Blog Tour: Review and Guest Post (Jennifer Anner Davis)

A Post About Writing

I was asked if I had any advice to give fellow writers. As I started to think about it, the best thing for any writer to do is read. A LOT!! Read everything you can get your hands on in the genre you are writing. Reading will teach you structure, pacing, dialogue, as well as familiarize yourself with what’s out there. You need to know what works, what sells, and what doesn’t.  When I read a book that I fall in love with, I reread it several times. It’s amazing what you can learn about the writing process from reading the same book multiple times.

Another thing that helped me was finding a group of fellow writers that write in my genre. We critique each other’s work and push one another to be better writers. People sometimes think that writing is lonely, and something done in solitude. That’s not the case. You have to have other people read and critique your work in order to get better. And not your friends. You have to have other people who know the craft. Since I write YA, I joined the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). This organization is how I met my fellow critique partners. It also helped to attend the monthly meetings and learn what’s going on in the publishing world.

I also recommend that you write every single day. The first thing you write most likely won’t be the first thing you publish. The first book you write is simply you figuring out your voice, style, and what the heck you’re doing!! Each book will get stronger.

Sometimes it’s so easy to give up. But keep writing, reading, and get involved with other writers. Your perseverance will eventually pay off!! And I believe that writing a story that touches someone’s life is one of the most rewarding experiences.

Review of "The Key" by Jennifer Anne Davis

Rema has always had questions...about why her aunt and uncle keep her so secluded...about what the rest of the world holds...about her parents. She has always longed for freedom as well, but answers and freedom alike seem so impossible at times. Rema's chance meeting with Darmik, Prince Darmik to be completely accurate, at first seems like nothing more than something to inspire daydreams, but Rema soon realizes that this chance meeting will drastically change her life. The danger she finds herself in threatens to break not only her, but the hope of an entire nation.

I love fantasy, but I am always hesitant to pick up a new fantasy writer. When you become used to a certain world, it's characters, and a writer's style, it's hard to switch and become invested in a new fantasy world. For other readers like me, have no fears of taking a chance on Davis's "The Key."

The world David creates for her True Reign series is rich and has a depth that will draw readers into the world. The history of the kingdom is positively compelling, built on blood, betrayal, and only the smallest hope that everything can be set right. I loved learning about how this society worked, the class system of tattoos, and the boundaries that keep everyone locked into a small area for their entire life. Description is always important in fantasy, and Davis painted a beautiful picture of this brittle kingdom on the brink of exploding into chaos.

The characters in The Key were well developed and hard to pull away from. Rema is someone readers will connect with from the first page. She's so full life, so eager to have a bigger life and make her mark on the world. Watching her face trials, danger, and heartbreak isn't easy. I came to truly care about Rema and I wanted very much to see her succeed and escape. The emotional journey readers will accompany her on will keep them turning page after page.

Prince Darmik is another excellent character. He is extremely complicated and carries not only the heavy weight of his father's constant disapproval, but the burden of trying to uncover a truth which may show him more than he is ready to see. Darmik struggles throughout the book to live up to his father's wishes while still being true to himself. He wants to know the truth, but he's afraid of what finding it will mean. On top of all that, the woman he loves, Rema, has been placed just out of reach and getting her back could cost him everything.

The romance between Darmik and Rema was beautifully crafted. This is not your typical fairytale prince falling for the girl of his dreams. Their relationship is dangerous, in more ways than one. It's hard to explain too much without giving away spoilers, but readers will be hungrily turning pages right up to the end. And when they get to the end, they'll be eager for the next book in the series. I'm already itching to get my hands on it!
