Guest Post from Author Brooke Williams

Guest Post Topic:

Your novel involves the concept of putting money above other aspects of life. Talk us through this concept and how its involved in your novel.

Money is a huge deal in this world, is it not? Sadly, it seems as if people are driven by money on a daily basis. They have it…they want to spend it…they hoard it…they don’t have it…they need it. It causes constant problems! In “Wrong Place, Right Time,” the main character, Kate Covington is in a huge amount of debt. She’s living paycheck to paycheck. And not because she went crazy shopping with her credit card either. Her debt is noble and justified. But it’s still debt and she desperately needs to clear her name. On the other end, we have Chad Leida who appears to be practically rolling in money, though he hasn’t done much to earn it himself. He wants to do what he wants to do and that’s that.

So though money is brought up and a very important aspect of this novella, it is also not at the highest level of importance. The characters realize their focus is off at times and make adjustments accordingly. In the end, it’s more about emotions, companionship, love, ambition and maybe even a little attitude.

I hope you enjoy all of the elements of “Wrong Place, Right Time” and how they come together. When you set your e-reader down after finishing this book, I hope there’s a smile on your face and laughter in your heart.

Author Interview: Thonie Hevron @thonieh

Today I'm pleased to welcome Thonie Hevron to the blog to talk about her upcoming book, "With Malice Aforethought."

1.     What inspired you to begin writing?
When I was in the third grade, the teacher gave us an assignment to write a myth. I wrote a story about how the leopard got his spots. From then on, there was no stopping me. Then, as an adult, I read a mystery that left me unsatisfied. I thought, “I could do better.” So, I started Civil War romance. After a while, I figured that one had been done so I moved to something I was comfortable with—police procedurals/mysteries. I had a lengthy career in law enforcement. I knew that when I had questions, I had many different resources to help answer them.

2.     Would you classify your writing more as plot driven or character driven? At first, I thought my stories were plot driven—hero has to find and stop bad guy. But now, I’m on the third book of the Nick and Meredith Mystery Series and find the characters drive the story forward as much as the plot. Many of my readers look upon the two protagonists as “old friends.”

3.     Can you tell us a little about your main character? Meredith Ryan is a Sonoma County Sheriff’s
Violent Crimes Detective. She’s a city girl, raised in San Francisco by an abusive father. In the first book, By Force or Fear, her husband is killed by a powerful and dangerous man who is stalking her. Meredith pairs up with my other main character, Nick Reyes, also a Sonoma County Violent Crimes Detective, to fight for her survival.

4.     Without giving away too much, tell us a little about the main conflict in this book. There are two levels of conflict in With Malice Aforethought. Nick has promoted and is now Meredith’s superior. As they search the remote Sonoma hills for a murderer, both detectives have a tight rein on their emotions, Cops who are involved with each other are nothing but trouble. They uncover an unpredictable menace that detours the investigation to a place no one expected. They are too busy to admit how they feel about each other. Or are they?

5.     What do you hope readers take away from your book?
My target audience is the people in law enforcement. I hope to present credible characters in performance of their duties. The scenarios are authentic from a procedural-point of view. The situations are mine. I like to put my heroes into positions where they could easily make a bad choice. Between them, they make sound decisions that are realistic, probably not textbook and definitely “the right thing to do.” I hope readers will find a satisfying morality, especially when it’s complicated.

6.     Now for a few fun questions! What song best describes your writing style?
Ravel’s Bolero. I start out slow—my muse needs to warm up—and finish with a crescendo. When I listen to music, I like classical.

7.     Night Owl or Early Bird?
I spent many years on graveyards and loved being up at times when the rest of the world was asleep. However, I don’t think that was my most creative time. Now that I’ve retired, I get up at 5am to write so I can meet my deadlines and still have a life. Early morning is when I am the sharpest.

8.     Skittle or M&Ms?
M&M’s—yum.

9.     Who are your favorite authors?
I read Larry McMurtry for his magnificent characters, Robert Crais for how he weaves mystery into his stories, Michael Connelly with his cunning cop insights, PJ Parrish taught me how to make interior dialog and feelings drive the story forward, and  T. Jefferson Parker and J.A. Jance for superlative plotting and story construction.

10.  Can you tell us about your future projects?
My current work occupies most of my time. Even though it is set in the Sonoma hills, thirty miles from where I live, it is a different world. Consequently, research takes a lot of my time. Also, I’ve found a remarkable resource for my detail accuracy—a retired Violent Crimes Investigator Sergeant. He has kept me from making some huge mistakes. After Malice, I have a book I wrote years ago and put on the closet shelf. It had some glaring issues. But, I like the plot well enough to go back and re-work it. It won’t be a Nick and Meredith Mystery but I’m game for a fourth one if there’s enough interest.

Author Interview: Helen Osterman

Today I'm pleased to welcome author, Helen Osterman to the blog to talk about her book, "Danger by Design."

First, a little bit about "Danger By Design."

Helen Osterman has created the most unique amateur sleuth and mystery plot to date. Follow this probing Italian-American superstitious widow, Net Petrone, on an exhilarating caper of fraud and murder. You’ll love the journey, characters, and exhilarating climax.

1.     What inspired you to begin writing?
I always had a vivid imagination. As a child I made up stories in my head. During my nursing career, I wrote for nursing and medical journals. So, when I retired, I began writing novels.

2.     Would you classify your writing more as plot driven or character driven?

I would say character driven. Although a good plot had to go along with a memorable character.

3.     Can you tell us a little about your main character?

My series character is Emma Winberry. She’s in her sixties, has a sixth sense, and talks to her Guardian Angel. She lives in a posh condo on Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive with her significant other, Nate Sandler. They are both supernumeraries (extras) in the opera.

4.     Without giving away too much, tell us a little about the main conflict in this book.

Delia Armanetti, a member of the chorus in the opera and a friend of Emma’s, suffers a stroke, leaving her paralyzed on the right side and unable to speak intelligibly. Her daughter-in-law, June, resents the fact that she may have to help care for Delia.
June has a hidden agenda and Emma steps in to help her friend, putting herself in danger.

5.     What do you hope readers take away from your book?

I try to teach my readers something in every book I write. My nursing background always sneaks in. In this book, readers should learn the difference in the behavior of people with right sided strokes verses those with left sided strokes. They have to be handled very differently.

6.     Now for a few fun questions! What song best describes your writing style?

Nessun Dorma, from Puccini’s Touradot. It means no one sleeps.

7.     Night Owl or Early Bird?

Definitely an early bird. My brain shuts down about eight PM.

8.     Skittle or M&Ms?
M&Ms.

9.     Who are your favorite authors?
I love Mitchner’s works. Have read them all more than once. I have no real favorites., but Agatha Christie is one.

10.  Can you tell us about your future projects?
I am ending the Emma Winberry series with six books. Number six is titled Rogue Wave.

It takes place on a sailboat in the Caribbean where Emma gets involved with Venezuelan drug lords. It’s really a mystery/adventure.

I also have two books about a different character, a superstitious Italian woman. The first book involves an organization scamming the elderly. It’s titled Danger by Design and was published in September, 2014.

Blog Tour: Apocalypta by Robin Matchett @RobMatchettAuth

Approach to Apocalypta by Rob Matchett

What people should know about the book…

Apocalypta is a novel about the future, perhaps even a novel from the future. I emphasize from because the setting of the novel is on the cusp of the 25th century and the story takes us back in time to our present 21st century. So it would seem in a sense that the story in the future is built on the past retrospective to our present time. I felt that it was important to capture to the best of my ability a realistic scenario of times to come.

Obviously, one can never know the future until it happens, but using a template of the past 400 years and its historical shocks and paradigm shifts, a fair guesstimate can be made. What is especially interesting is the sudden trajectory of technical progress within the last 30 years with the advent of global use of the internet through chip circuitry and fibre optics which apparently had their origin from alien technology according to highly placed sources that the author had researched.

A very credible source was Col. Philip Corso who was ordered to seed the reverse-engineered alien technology into the military-industrial complex 60 years ago. Corso sat on the National Security Council. Others have affirmed the veracity of his position and rank and revelations in his book The Day After Roswell. One might think this is ridiculous or delusional because there was not barely any notice taken of his story which came out in the 1990s. The media basically ignored it, because they couldn’t get any endorsement from any legitimate government agency.

Not surprising. Perhaps, the powers that be felt it couldn’t hurt the classified nature of deeply compartmentalized alien programs if a little information was released innocuously by a retired officer of the army. Or perhaps, little by little some plan had been enacted to slowly acclimatize the ignorant public about what is really going on. Anyone who knew the emphatic truth would naturally wonder why the media didn’t proclaim globally AMERICAN GOVERNMENT HAS MADE CONTACT WITH ALIENS! Well, that has yet to happen. Is there collusion in government to suppress that kind of mainstream exposure? Or is media frightened of the shocking nature of that kind of information – the most profound in the history of civilization.

My book isn’t so much about this; just that the premise of this great secret kept from the public has a karmic resolution down the ages to come. Just as we discover and unlock secrets of the past, and history is constantly being rewritten to reflect new understandings, and so in our story we unlock the secrets of our present from the future. Whistleblowers have given us a glimpse of the deep political nature of forbidden knowledge and its uses in the power structures of global supremacy and security. Moreover, the phenomenal implications of a universe replete with thousands upon thousands of ancient civilizations, some hundreds of millions of years beyond us, and others only fifty thousand or so years beyond us, at least must give us pause as to our precarious emergence as a technological upstart.

Apocalypta is really about humanity and how we must adapt eventually to the universal family. And yes, we are apparently in a relative way, seen as such for the most part in spite of various bad apples on both sides. It should be known we are feared as somewhat barbaric and do not want our participation in a larger sense until we have managed our global destructive ways into something harmonious politically, culturally and ecologically. Indeed we have a long way to go – thousands of years.

Apocalypta attempts to enlighten our darker fears and dystopian defaults. Certain characters such as Cephren, Flower Child, Jimmy Pidgeon and Heyoka are new prototypes that alight the path to harmony for the ages to come. These types exist in all times, as well as their darker opposites. This is my story for humanity’s leap into the future and integration into the galactic community, which has already begun.

Meet the Author

Rob (Robin) Matchett was born in Paris, France, in 1956 of Canadian parents, and moved to Canada at four years old. Apparently on the way, he spent hours in a porthole watching the sea, pondering existence. Now his life continues through a porthole – a regret being he didn’t remain in France a few more years.

Though, embracing Canada he went native, steeped in the elements from where land-locked on the crest of a giant windblown hill, he commands from the bridge of a ship, foundered on springs, fields and forests. Still unreleased from the yoke of his servitude, he dabbles in the stars, unlocking secrets from history and the future. Many transfigurations have occurred, of which he has faithfully transcribed into various literary forms, including novels, poems and film scripts, and continues to do so. Among other eclectic interests, he is known to be well-read; enjoy wholesome kitchen garden culinary pursuits; calvados; has musical inclinations, and often known to be wired into the Grateful Dead. He is of a retiring nature, addicted to movies and documentaries, considered a professional obligation rather than lesser appraisals.

More about Apocalypta

Apocalypta is a novel about a post-apocalyptic world at the cusp of the 25th century. With the discovery of a synaptic memory chip holding the memories of individuals in the past, there is an attempt to avert a return to the terrible conflagrations of the past. This chip - 'the eyes of god' - holds salvation through the truth. The main character, implanted with the chip, bids the reader to follow history back to our present time in order to understand the future. Moreover, humanity has a chance to become members of a galactic confederation, which through various species have been instrumental in our emergence from earliest times. Many unusual characters color this story, which is ultimately about the struggle for humanity to rise to a higher place in its long quest for survival.

They are coming for her.
Interview with Ashlee McNicol
Gladden: What inspired you to begin writing?
McNicol: I started writing when I was second grade by a mere glance at a window suggesting that I should “write a book.” The thought was delightful to me, and I have been writing ever since. My fantasy worlds have only just began.

Gladden: Would you classify your writing more as plot driven or character driven?

McNicol: I would have to say more character driven because the characters lead my stories. Half of the time, they don’t listen to me anyway! I have to force them to stick with the same plot. Yet, when I do that, the story deteriorates. I just have to let them be and let them do what they were made to do.

Gladden: Can you tell us a little about your main character?

McNicol: The main character in the Secrets of Ghastillanda Series is an eighteen-year-old girl named Mrsorri Hall. She is a resilient girl of many shades. She is often referred to as a survivor and as the homage goes, she will do anything to survive.

Gladden: Without giving away too much, tell us a little about the main conflict in this book.

McNicol: The Four Worlds are breaking apart, and only one person can bring them together. Yet, she can’t do it without the help of some very strange pieces in the game of Ghastillanda.

Gladden: What do you hope readers take away from your book?

McNicol: I want to inspire young kids to dig into imagination. From the book in specific, I want them to learn more about the societies present between the Four Worlds. I hope to get them to think critically and investigate how these worlds were created. I want them to envision things with their mind and picture the fantasy setting.

Gladden: Now for a few fun questions! What song best describes your writing style?

McNicol: I am going to have to say Sail by Awolnation. It gets me pumped and exerts action into the pages. The same themes are present in my book.

Gladden: Night Owl or Early Bird?

McNicol: I love sleep, but I know I am much more inclined to stay up into the wee hours of the night versus waking up at ungodly hours during the weekend. I vote Night Owl! Good question.

Gladden: Skittle or M&Ms?

McNicol: Peanut M&Ms! Love chocolate and peanut butter together. YUM.

Gladden: Who are your favorite authors?

McNicol: I am most influenced by young adult fantasy writers because I feel they really help kids expand their imaginations and live in different worlds. My particular favorites include Veronica Roth, Cassandra Clare, Suzanne Collins, and J.K. Rowling, of course. I love their writing, and am constantly inspired by the voices they use when portraying characters. Their premises are unique. That intrigues me, and makes me want to keep reading more.

Gladden: Can you tell us about your future projects?

McNicol: I have several in the works at the moment, but the series itself is expecting some giant twists and turns in the next couple of books. The main character, Mrsorri, will be unlocking a series of secrets as the books go along, and you will slowly figure out where she came from and why she has her secret in the first place.

the FOR ALWAYS series is finally here!

When Malyn Reed, seer of ghosts, fell in love with one, she knew it wouldn't end well, but when love pleaded with her heart, she was unable to deny it. Falling hard for the sexy, southern gentleman, Beau Brogan, who died in 1910, her already strange life quickly turned into a life she'd never imagined, filled with love and heartache that would change her... for always.

When Beau Brogan died, left to haunt his homestead for over a century, he thought it was his hell on earth, until Malyn Reed moved in. But like his life, their time together came to an untimely end and they were forced to say goodbye... for now.

In this third and final installment of the For Always series, love will be tested in ways that Beau and Malyn aren't prepared for.
